EPCHS Band History: 1960's

 

1960’s

The Decade at a Glance

The 60’s were a new start for the band, because in 1960 the new band room was built. Along with this new addition, the band still entertained at football and basketball games. The band also participated at District and State Contests, Bradley Festivals, All-State Conventions, and Super State Band Competition. The marching band marched in Canton Friendship Festival, ISU Invitational Marching Band Contest, Veteran’s Day Parades, and Santa Parades. The concert band performed at the spring and winter concerts, as well as other concerts throughout the state. In 1960, 16 members received first place rating at State Solo Contest. In 1963 the band bought new uniforms. In 1964, the band won the Governor’s Trophy at the Illinois State Fair and played for the State School Band Convention in Chicago at the Sherman House. In 1965, the band received first place in the Peoria Veteran’s Day Parade. 1966 the band received first place at the Illinois State Fair, and received superior ratings in the Veterans’ Day Parade. In 1967, the band received straight superiors at contest. In 1968, the band bought new uniforms. In 1969, the band played under the direction of internationally known composer Valclav Nehlybel for the Byerly Sight-Reading Clinic at the Pere Marquette Hotel.

 

1960

Activities: The band performed at the football games and basketball games. The band also participated at District and State Contest, where sixteen members received first at State Contest, in April.

Band Information: The new band room was built. The band was also expecting new uniforms in the fall.

 

1961

Major- Kent Litchfield

Band Information: The advanced band consisted of around 80 members, intermediate band consisted of around 20 members, and beginning band consisted of around 30 members.

 

1962

Major- Gary Combs

Band Information: The advanced band consisted of around 70 members, the intermediate band consisted of around 20 members, and the beginning band consisted of around 30 members.

 

1963

Director- Mr. Arnold

Major- Keith Ingold

Activities: The band entertained at half time during the football games, as well as, performing during the basketball games. The band participated in the Mid-State Eight Festival, Bradley Band Day, and other various marches and parades. The band had concerts throughout the state, and the first stage band was organized.

Band Information: The band bought new uniforms.

 

1964

Director- Mr. Arnold

Major- Keith Ingold

Activities: The band performed at football and basketball games. The band also participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade, Santa Parade, Christmas Concert (with the choir), and students also tried out for Super All-State. The band went to Chicago where they played at the State School Band Convention at the Sherman House.

Awards: The band received the Governor’s Trophy at Illinois State Fair.

 

1965

Director- Mr. Russell Vroman

Major- Jack Majure

Activities: The band participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade, Illinois State Fair, Mid-State Eight Music Festival, and play at the football and basketball games.

Awards: The band received a first place in the Peoria Veteran’s Day Parade, and a first place at the Illinois State Fair.

Band Information: The concert band and orchestra was formed.

 

1966

Director- Mr. Vroman

Drum Major- Jack Majure

Activities: The band participated in the Illinois State Fair, Veteran’s Day Parade, Mid-State Eight Music Festival, and spring concert ("Springtasia"). One member played at Super All-State Band, Merri Hinkley.

Awards: The band received first at the Illinois State Fair, and superior ratings in the Veteran’s Day Parade.

 

1967

Director- Mr. Vroman

Drum Major- Jack Majure

Activities: The band took a tour of the Conn Band Instrument Factory, in Indiana. The band participated at the football and basketball games, Illinois State Fair, Homecoming Parade, Veteran’s Day Parade, United Fund Parade, Santa Clause Parade, Mid-State Nine Music Festival, and at State Contest. The band also went to Northwestern University.

Awards: The band received superior ratings at Illinois State Fair. The band also received straight superiors at contest.

 

1968

Historian- Barb Zebas

Librarian- Barb Winship

Activities: The band performed at the football and basketball games, Industry Fair, Canton Friendship Festival, EPCHS Homecoming Parade, EP VFW Parade, Santa Parade, Christmas Concert (with the choir), and Organizational State Contest.

Band Information: The band received new uniforms.

 

1969

Treasure- Bruce Bain

Drum Major- John RedShaw

Activities: The band participated in various parades, football and basketball games, Northwestern Band Day, Canton Friendship Festival, ISU Invitational Marching Band Contest. The band participated in the Sight Reading Band with Valclav Nehlybel for the Byerly Sight-Reading Clinic, at the Pere Marquette Hotel.

Band Information: The marching band consisted of around 100 members, and concert band consisted of around 60 members.
