Below is a list of software that relates to music and band.  We wanted to provide students the same resources that we utilize, so we have tried to keep costs limited and offered open source solutions where possible.  In many cases we use these free programs as our main option, and we do not have the professional package.  If you are interested in one of the professional packages, talk to Mr. Schneblin for more information about special discounts and opportunities.

Interactive Practice

Cost: $36.00 annual subscription

SmartMusic is award-winning interactive music software that provides the ideal practice environment. With a subscription to SmartMusic, students have unlimited access to the world’s largest accompaniment library for all ages and skill levels, which includes thousands of pieces of music.

Music Composition and Notation

Cost: Free demo, $100 student version, $295 educational version
Homepage: Sibelius

Sibelius is the leading music composition and notation software for educators, students, composers, arrangers, copyists and musicians of all kinds.  The Sibelius 6 demo (English) lets you try out almost all of the amazing features of Sibelius 6. This non-saving demo includes example scores and a demo user guide summarizing the main features of the program.

MuseScore is a free cross-platform WYSIWYG music notation program, that offers a cost-effective alternative to professional programs such as Sibelius and Finale. You can print beautifully engraved sheet music or save it as PDF or MIDI file.

Drill Design

Pyware 3D

3D is the most widely used drill design software on the market. Used by high school, college, university and corps around the world. The demo version has two limitations, the number of counts are limited to 80, and files cannot be saved.

Micro Marching Leauge
Cost: Free

Micro Marching League (MML) is an online based drill design package.  MML  lets marching fans design their own shows and share them online. Their supportive community is a great place to try new ideas, collaborate, and generally share your passion for the marching arts.

Audio Editing and Recording

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Digital Audio Workstation

A digital audio workstation (DAW) is an electronic system designed solely or primarily for recording, editing and playing back digital audio.

Ardour is a, choose your price, cross platform digital audio workstation.  It is a great introduction to DAW work flow and understanding the usefulness of such software.

Homepage: Impro-Visor

Impro-Visor (short for “Improvisation Advisor”) is a music notation program designed to help jazz musicians compose and hear solos similar to ones that might be improvised. The objective is to improve understanding of solo construction and tune chord changes. In addition, it can improvise on its own.  Because rhythm-section (e.g. piano, bass, drums) accompaniment is automatically generated from chords, Impro-Visor can be used as a play-along device.

With VLC, there is no need to continually update many different codec packs. VLC comes with nearly every codec built in! And whats more, VLC can play back your files, even if the media is damaged! Missing or broken pieces wont stop VLC. All the video and audio information that remains can be played.
